About the event

A Face in the Crowd is a 1957 American satirical drama film directed by Elia Kazan and starring Andy GriffithPatricia Neal and Walter Matthau. The screenplay by Budd Schulberg is based on his short story "Your Arkansas Traveler" from the 1953 collection Some Faces in the Crowd.  Female radio reporter Marcia Jeffries (Patricia Neal) turns folk-singing drifter Larry "Lonesome" Rhoades (film debut of Andy Griffith which launched him into stardom) into a powerful media star who becomes utterly detestable during his meteoric rise. Though this incisive satire film was a flop on its initial release, subsequent generations have marveled at its eerily prescient diagnosis of the toxic intimacy between media and politics in American life.  Also film debuts of Anthony Franciosa and Lee Remick.  In 2008, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. Registration requested; RSVP below.  Questions? email  programs@ncjwlongbeach.org or call (657) 235‑2511. Again, we'll meet at 6:45 pm.
